Dr. Wendy Hughes is a psychologist who usually assists the S.W.A.T unit. She is portrayed by Cathy Cahlin Ryan.

Biography[]

Dr. Hughes serves two functions within SWAT. First, she can provide psychological profiles of suspects and unknown perpetrators to help SWAT plan who to target and how. Second, she serves as a private counselor to all SWAT personnel.

Deacon[]

After 20 Squad successfully prevents the suicide of former 20-David Buck Spivey[1], Wendy performs a psychological debrief for all six members. During his debrief, Deacon admits to prior suicidal thoughts of his own. He and Dr. Hughes agree to meet on a semi-regular basis to work through those thoughts and help him with the mental tools to cope.

Deacon eventually transitions to talking to his paster for psychological advice, but he still acknowledges how helpful Hughes is to SWAT as a whole.[2]

Hicks[]

Dr. Hughes' more recurring patient is Commander Robert Hicks. As a commanding officer, Hicks must undergo a psychological evaluation every five years, which Hughes must approve.

At some point before the series, Hughes signed Hicks' review on the condition that he achieve a better work-life balance over he next five years. During his next review,[3] Hughes notes Hicks failed to do this and insists on not signing his evaluation until they talk it out. The two eventually agree that Hicks never took the time to mourn his late wife Barbara since her death nine years sago; without her to help him decompress after a long shift, his main plan has been to throw himself into his work so he collapses from exhaustion every night. Hughes signs Hicks' review contingent on him taking a vacation so he finally has time to grieve.
