"Unraveling" is the fifth episode of the sixth season in the remake version of S.W.A.T., and the one-hundred-eleventh episode overall, which was aired on November 4, 2022.
Summary[]
When the team stops the flash-mob robbery of a department store, they fear the crime was designed to distract from something more sinister – murder. Also, Hondo enlists Street to connect with Powell after she ignores orders in the field.
Recap[]
At the Harrelson residence, Nichelle gets ready for her first day as a police performance auditor for the Office of the Inspector General. The day's big agenda item is whether the Good Neighbor program should be shut down. Hondo explains that this was the city program Luca used to buy his house in a lower-income neighborhood for a below-market price, as part of an effort to integrate police into those communities. Hondo offers to ask Luca to talk to Nichelle about his experience with the program, which Nichelle happily accepts.
At SWAT headquarters, Hicks briefs 20-suqad on the target for the day - "flash mob robberies," a phenomenon by which TikTok influencers spread the idea of targeting a particular store hours before it happens. Followers can then decide whether to join that particular robbery. Individual members are not a threat, but they collectively cause a lot of damage both financially and politically. Once Cyber Crimes identifies the next target, 20 Squad's mission is to help uniformed officers shut it down as it happening as part of a show of force.
Cybercrimes eventually directs 20 Squad to a high-end department store, where uniformed officers are already arresting robbers who made it outside. The team works its way in, with Street and Powell confronting two suspects with crowbars. Street subdues one with a beanbag launcher, but when the other bolts, Powell disobeys Street's order to follow him and uses a hidden route through the changing rooms to subdue the runner. Before Street can fully scold Powell, the two hear gunfire from another part of the store.
Deacon and Luca respond, exchanging fire with two masked gunmen. They manage to shoot one in the arm, who flees to the back where Hondo shoots him again. Meanwhile, Deacon and Luca discover an African American woman's body and realize that based on where she was standing and the trajectory of their bullets, it was possible that one Deacon's shots killed her.
Hondo and Tan chase down a man with a gun pulling a young man with him. They convince him to drop his weapon, at which point the young man, Hunter Wright, reveals the gunman, Roger Purdue, is his bodyguard. Hicks visits the scene, where Hondo explains that Hunter's father is Gregory Wright, a real-estate developer with more than a few enemies. Purdue returned fire on one of four gunmen. Deacon uses this opportunity to tell Hicks about the woman's death and, pending the Robbery and Homicide Division (RHD) investigation into it, surrender his firearm for ballistic analysis.
Tan reveals that unlike any of the past flash mob robberies, someone cut the feed to all CCTV cameras in the store before the robbery began. Witnesses also report that there were four gunmen, but that none of them were stealing merchandise. 20-Squad theorizes that with Gregory Wright having so many enemies, these gunmen used TikTok to direct the flash mob robberies so they could ambush Hunter. Had SWAT and LAPD not been ahead of this robbery, the gunmen would have used the cover to hide the real crime and get away with the crowd. Hicks asks Purdue and Hunter to enter protective custody, anticipating another attempt.

Trivia[]
- It reveals that Deacon didn't shoot LaToya where it founds a bullet hole.
- Before Deacon was exonerated, Hondo told Hicks "An unarmed black girl shot by a white cop. If it's true, I don't need to tell you how bad this can get." This references how Buck Spivey ("white cop") shooting Raymont Harris ("unarmed black" teen) is what led to his termination and Hondo's promotion to 20-David at the beginning of the series.
Goofs[]
- The paint buckets were empty, despite being stacked up in a paint store.
- When Deacon turns over his sidearm to RHD for ballistics testing, he removes the magazine but does not rack the slide to clear the chamber.
