Sergeant II David "Deacon" Kay is a 47-year-old Los Angeles Police Department S.W.A.T. veteran, having been with S.W.A.T. for 10 years. He currently serves as Hondo's second-in-command and temporary team leader during Hondo's absence.
At the start of the series following the dismissal of Sergeant Buck Spivey, Deacon was passed over for promotion to team leader in favor of Hondo, despite his seniority, in a blatant attempt to ease the tensions between the community and the LAPD. At first, he was upset about it but with Hondo working with him and communicating how Deacon should have been the leader and looking to him for advice, Deacon was amicable to it. Deacon was also almost being used as a pawn by upper management which he immediately said Hondo should be leader and he didn't want to be a part of the conflict.
He is portrayed by Jay Harrington.
Biography[]
Deacon is one of two members of the team that is married and has children; in 2018, Deacon and his wife, Annie, celebrated their 10-year anniversary. In "Seizure", Annie suffers a stroke and is hospitalized in need of an emergency surgery. In the next episode, "K-Town", Annie collapses once more, resulting in Captain Jessica Cortez contacting Police Commissioner Michael Plank in order to get a specialist to save her life. Deacon is a big hockey fan and played hockey in college. In the season finale of season one, "Hoax", Deacon and Annie renew their vows with their friends present. Deacon then takes extra time off to take care of their children, so that Annie can heal fully. Annie then reveals that she is pregnant again.
In season two, Deacon begins struggling financially, forcing him to take on a second job as a security consultant for a friend of Hondo's. Luca took note of Deacon's financial struggles, giving him money to help them. Matters reach a breaking point when his newborn daughter, Victoria Josie Kay, is diagnosed with a heart condition and he cannot afford an operation to fix it. Deacon then reaches out to a former loan shark he once busted to obtain a loan to be able to pay for the operation. Unfortunately, Deacon is then injured after crashing into a truck, preventing it from striking civilians. He is forced to go into rehab due to the injuries he sustained, growing his concern for his current situation.
In "Cash Flow", Deacon was offered command of the 50-squad after Sergeant Jack Mumford's retirement, but Deacon withdrew his name for consideration after he took money from a crime scene, holding onto it for a minute before putting it back.
When speaking to Chris about marriage, Deacon tells her that Annie and him went to counselling before getting married to make sure that they were prepared for married life. Throughout the counselling, they found out that there was so much that they didn't know about each other. He believes that this really helped their marriage and how strong they are together.
